In the late 70's, a group of local exhibitors, in both conformation and performance, began discussing forming a corgi club in the Atlanta area. The first organizational meeting of the PWCCGA was held in November of 1980 at the home of Rus and Delores Russell. With twelve corgi fanciers attending, officers were elected and committees appointed and the PWCCGA was up and running!
High on the agenda for those first meetings was working on a Constitution and Bylaws for AKC approval, planning our first B-Match and drafting a letter to the PWCCA requesting approval for the fledging Georgia Club.
In March, 1981 our first "regular" meeting was held with 22 members and visitors attending. The highlight was speaker J. Don Jones (former corgi owner and breeder and A.K.C. licensed judge) who gave us a quiz on the breed standard! Our first fun match was also held in March of 1981 with a total entry of 47 corgis, with several out of state entries—a success all around!
Over the next several years we organized a newsletter, created a club logo and incorporated. Our membership grew slowly to include all facets of corgi-lovers. Realizing that newer members would look to us for guidance, we continued to offer education and programs and;
adopted a Code of Ethics to guide the club;
offered training classes on conformation, obedience and companion training;
continued with ongoing education of prospective corgi judges;
sponsored programs on a wide-ranging list of topics, including immunizations, orthopedic problems, nutrition, just ot name a few.
We held our first Independent Specialty in 1988, and this continues to be an much anticipated annual event in April of each year.
2006 will mark our 19th Annual Specialty held in April in Perry, Georgia. We have a membership of over 45 members from several states. We continue to offer matches, performance events and educational programs to support our membership in their varied interests.
